CHAIRMAN Moffitt called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
ACT ON FALMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY ON MAY 10, 2012
HEARD Jane Baker, art teacher and Art Honor Society advisor at Falmouth High School, present a revised itinerary to take 48 art honor society students and their chaperones to New York City on May 10 to visit gallery spaces and tour the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Superintendent Dupuis and Falmouth High School Principal Driscoll approved the trip and recommended the school committee approve the trip as a school sponsored outing under policy JJH, Student Travel.1
MOTION by Mr. Patterson to approve the Falmouth High School National Art Honor Society trip to New York City on May 10, 2012. Seconded by Mrs. Fenwick. UNANIMOUS
HEAR UPDATE ON 2010-14 DISTRICT STRATEGIC PLAN
HEARD Beverly Shea, Director of Pupil Personnel Services, Mark Wilson, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Superintendent Dupuis report on the progress of work under the 2010-14 Strategic Plan goals of Communication, Innovation, Assessment and Diversity. 2
Mrs. Shea provided examples of work to address the diversity goals and noted the use of the Michigan Model curriculum to help students de-escalate potentially violent situations. She also identified the No Guff theme as an exemplary program as noted in the Coordinated Program Review.
Mark Wilson spoke about the four broad goals in the area of assessment and noted the two goals that are to be addressed this year: provide a scope and sequence of the district’s student assessments, and improve methods for data collection, storage, and analysis. Examples of work to accomplish the two goals were presented and discussed with school committee members.
Superintendent Dupuis reported on the goal of communication and the methods the school district employs to improve communication with parents and students, i.e. open houses, teacher websites and blogs, newsletters, PowerSchool, and ConnectEd, a telephone messaging system.
In the absence of Wendy Haskell, Director of Technology, Library/Media, Superintendent Dupuis reported on the goal of communication. He noted that innovation at Lawrence School is functioning well and everyone is working to train staff to use the tools the district has in place to communicate with students and parents. Discussion ensued on the topic of recycling to become part of the school culture.
HEAR UPDATE ON TOWN MEETING
HEARD Superintendent Dupuis update the school committee on the FY-13 budget and report that the Finance Committee is prepared to amend the FY-13 budget in the warrant to reflect the appropriate salary/wages and expense data voted on March 27, 2012.3 Mrs. Fenwick suggested Chairman Moffitt emphasize in her message to town meeting members the reductions in the school department budget are needs and were reduced in order to accommodate the town manager’s and finance committee’s recommended budget.
CONSIDER RESCHEDULING MAY 8, 2012 SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
ADVISED by Superintendent Dupuis that the VIPS Dinner is on May 1, 2012 and recommended the school committee consider moving the May 8 meeting to May 1 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. to coincide with the dinner.
MOTION by Mr. Patterson to approve the Superintendent’s recommendation to move the May 8, 2012 school committee meeting to May 1, 2012. Seconded by Mrs. Yoder. UNANIMOUS
CONDUCT ROUTINE BUSINESS
THERE were no comments from the public.
MOTION by Mrs. Fenwick to release the executive session minutes of March 22, 2011, April 26, 2011, June 28, 2011, July 26, 2011, August 10, 2011, December 13, 2011, January 10, 2012 and February 28, 2012.4 Seconded by Mr. Patterson. UNANIMOUS
REPORT FROM SUPERINTENDENT
ADVISED by Superintendent Dupuis that Falmouth High School Girls Hockey Coach Erin Blood was named Boston Herald Coach of the Year. 5
REPORT FROM THE CHAIRMAN
CHAIRMAN Moffitt reported no new activities.
REPORTS FROM COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Mrs. Fenwick raised the issue of “pink slime”, an ammonium hydroxide processing aid that is added to finely ground beef, being used in school lunches and suggested action by the school department to opt-out of its use in accordance with a press release from the United State Department of Agriculture (USDA). Mr. Dupuis assured the school committee the food served in the school cafeterias is safe and will consider the option in the future.
Mr. Patterson commended Ted Burt for his letter to the editor of the Falmouth Enterprise with regard to the Falmouth Public Schools public relations brochure.
Mrs. Medeiros reported on her attendance at the Soup for the Soul fundraiser.
CONDUCT FINANCE, FACILITIES AND HUMAN RESOURCES BUSINESS
HEARD Superintendent Dupuis report on kindergarten registration data as of March 23, 2012 and offered a comparison chart with last year’s kindergarten data. 6
HEARD Superintendent Dupuis report on the monthly financial statement for March. The budget subcommittee will meet in the near future to outline the end of the year closeout process. 7
MOTION by Mrs. Medeiros to adjourn. Seconded by Mrs. Fenwick. UNANIMOUS
